How to love and care for your unique Berber rug the right way?

The maintenance of a wool carpet is essential, it allows you to keep your art piece for as long as possible in its original appearance. You should honor your Moroccan Berber wool carpet by cleaning it according to the rules of the art and, for that: follow our guide!

You should start by knowing that regular cleaning makes it possible to “re-inflate” your carpet, and to reshape the fibers in order to make them more fluffy and more flexible. Exposing your berber rug to direct sunlight every once in a while is the most efficient love language .

“ Please note that during the first two months, it is normal for your carpet to lose its excess wool in the form of lint. Just vacuum the excess without rubbing it. ”

Use a vacuum cleaner in gentle brushing mode. First of all, regular maintenance of your carpet is essential, you must not wait for it to be stained to want to clean it. It all starts with the vacuum cleaner, which will need to be used often so that the dust does not get stuck in the fibers. There is no need to have a powerful vacuum cleaner, the brush is the most important even for thick and fluffy carpets. Your vacuum cleaner and your Berber rug should become best friends!

White vinegar and lukewarm water. For stubborn stains, this formula is great for removing stains from your carpet.

Baking soda and sparkling water. For the most encrusted stains, then take sparkling water and rub gently with a wrung out sponge. Thirty minutes after this operation, sprinkle the stains with baking soda, when the powder is completely dry, vacuum. Baking soda is a good product for cleaning woolen rugs, if stubborn stains are found, use this recipe.

Once a year, depending on the amount of traffic, it will be advisable to do a deep cleaning of the carpet.

Dry shampoo: Cleaning is done by sprinkling with powdered shampoo, followed by vacuuming after the product has penetrated.

Wet shampoo: This is the more Moroccan way; dilute the product as little as possible. Do not soak the carpet. Using a shampoo, distribute the cleaning product to which you could add vinegar, paying particular attention to the most soiled parts. Leave to dry, use this method on the sunniest days.

By rotating your Berber rug frequently and changing the location of furniture on it every six months, you can keep your rug from getting worn out in specific areas. Keeping some spots under high pressure in certain areas causes sagging and can seriously damage the wool that needs to breathe.

After a good cleaning, it takes a good drying in the sun (balcony, garden, window, terrace), in the open air for this is the way to go. The carpet must be completely dry before it finds its place inside the house. (A poorly dried carpet could quickly become a nest of moths and emit a bad odor, and we don’t want that!)

No washing machine. Even if your washing machine is big enough to wash your carpet in it, the answer is still no, don’t! Berber carpets are handcrafted products and softness is essential to take care of  the time consuming work of art that your female weavers have done. For proper cleaning, you can also call on cleaning professionals.

Dry cleaning can also be a great way to clean your dirty rug. However,  we do not recommend steam cleaning, because the hot steam could cause some damage to the wool.
